WordPress / Yahoo Brickhouse Meetup
Written by Matt on June 30, 2008 – 2:01 pm -If you’re in the San Francisco area join us at the Yahoo! Brickhouse for a WordPress meetup this Wednesday. This’ll actually be my first time at the Brickhouse, but I hear they have some mean Wii players.
The EU Gravy Train
Written by Donncha on June 30, 2008 – 9:26 am -Irish MEP Kathy Sinnott and other MEPs filmed in Brussells at 7am on a Friday morning clocking in with bags packed. Oh dear.

Kathy Sinnott, fresh faced and angry after 7 hours work overnight.
Makes me wonder if I should have voted yes to Lisbon. Kathy Sinnott was looking for a No vote (no, she didn’t influence me) but perhaps the Lisbon Treaty would have stopped this sort of thing. Oh wait! Who am I kidding? Of course it’ll continue!

Update on WordPress blog APIs
Written by Dougal on June 30, 2008 – 8:32 am -I mentioned previously that the XML-RPC and Atom blog APIs would be disabled by default when WordPress 2.6 is released. This was a matter of some debate within the community, and there has been some clarification:
- The APIs will not be automatically disabled for sites upgrading from older versions. Since the APIs have previously been ‘on’ by default, they will continue to function.
For new installs of WordPress 2.6 and later, there will be an option presented at install-time to enable the APIs.Or not. They seem to have removed that between Beta 1 and Beta 2.- There will be options in the
Writesettings to enable or disable XML-RPC posting and Atom API posting individually.
This sounds like the most reasonable path to make this change without causing disruption for those who have been using client tools like Ecto, MarsEdit, or Windows Live Writer (or third-party web services which can post to blogs, like Flickr or Delicious) to post to their blogs.
Also, though this change is being made under the moniker of a security improvement, that is not to imply that the current API code is not secure. It is simply a pretty standard practice to turn off services that are not used, just as when building a dedicated email server, you wouldn’t turn on FTP unless you absolutely needed it. Stats from WordPress.com have shown that only about 5% of its users utilize the client APIs, so it doesn’t make sense to automatically turn it on for the 95% who aren’t using them.
Saor Patrol in Cork
Written by Donncha on June 28, 2008 – 3:26 pm -Saor Patrol, a Scottish band “with their vibrant pipe tunes and drum rhythms [that] please and excite many a crowd” certainly lived up to their reputation when they played for the crowds in front of Brown Thomas on Patrick Street this afternoon.
I came upon them when they were nearly finished but the few minutes of music I heard was exciting and lively, and my son Adam totally enjoyed the spectacle. When the crowd clapped in appreciation, Adam joined in, and almost jumped out of his buggy to dance to the beat!
They were playing in Cork City Hall today as part of the Your Mental Health awareness campaign by the HSE. Depression and other mental health problems still have an awful stigma in this country. People can be reluctant to talk about those problems, families and friends hide them away, or pretend they don’t exist, but they’re health problems like any other. With the right treatment at the right time most people can be helped.
Listening to Saor Patrol certainly lifted my spirits. I was tired and worn down but their music reinvigorated me!

Good Health To Us All
By James Hunaban
The key to good health is a nutrient-rich diet that promotes well-being and reduces the chance of diseases. The cornerstone of good health is good food. Good health is something we take for granted when we have it and strive for when we haven’t. Good health is something we all should cherish. Another important component of good health is regular exercise and a positive mental attitude. Good health is a fusion of mind and body. Keeping our bodies in good health is something we should pay close attention to. Good health is one of the essentials for a happy life.

You know how important exercise is, right. Experts suggest children need at least an hour of daily exercise and a healthy diet. Did you realize that less than 15% of all kids get enough good exercise each day? Exercise is a vital component of good health, especially as you age. Regular exercise and healthy eating are fundamental to good health - so is choosing the right physician. Vigorous exercise involves minimal health risks for individuals in good health or those following a doctor’s advice. One example of the benefits of exercise is an aerobic workout which has long been shown to reduce the incidence of low back pain. WordPress Exploit Scanner 0.1
Written by Donncha on June 26, 2008 – 1:17 pm -My previous post about hacked WordPress sites caused Donnacha to ask,
After your last post on this subject, I was thinking that it would be a good idea for Automattic to create a plugin that carries out all the checks you suggested people do to find out if they’ve been hacked…
At the time I wasn’t too optimistic about it but after thinking about the idea for a few days I came up with the WordPress Exploit Scanner which does most of what Donnacha wanted.
This WordPress plugin searches the files on your site for a few known strings sometimes used by hackers, and lists them with code fragments taken from the files. It also makes a few checks of the database, looking at the active_plugins blog option, the comments table, and the posts table.
It also allows the blog owner to search for whatever string they like which could come in handy when new exploit code is used in a hack.
You must be running WordPress 2.5.1 or higher to use this plugin. There’s not much point in finding exploited files if you’re running an old version of the software that can be broken into again.
Download the plugin from here: WordPress Exploit Scanner
Thanks to those who tested the plugin, especially Cathal Garvey who provided some great feedback!

Intermittent therapy with tacrolimus for flare prevention and long-term disease control in stabilised atopic dermatitis
Written by kim on June 25, 2008 – 3:06 pm -According to a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, maintenance therapy with tacrolimus ointment is associated with significantly more flare-free days compared with placebo, and a significantly longer time until first disease relapse in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD).Researchers evaluated the long-term safety and efficacy of 3-times-weekly use of tacrolimus ointment in preventing AD relapse in 125 patients with moderate to severe AD. Patients who were clear of disease after up to 16 weeks of treatment with tacrolimus ointment were randomised to receive 3-times-weekly treatment with either tacrolimus ointment (0.03% or 0.1%, n=125) or placebo (n=72) for 40 weeks. The primary end point was the number of flare-free treatment days.According to the researchers, the mean number of flare-free treatment days was 177 for tacrolimus and 134 for placebo (P = 0.003). Additionally, the median time to first relapse was 169 days for tacrolimus and 43 for placebo (P = 0.037). Furthermore, there were no statistically significant differences in the number or type of adverse effects. The authors however also state that one of the limitations of this study is that the patients included were known to have had a satisfactory response with prior tacrolimus use. They also conclude that “Although other studies have demonstrated the long-term efficacy of tacrolimus ointment when administered twice daily for the treatment of AD, the results of this long-term study demonstrate that reducing the frequency of tacrolimus ointment application to 3 times weekly after clearing, significantly reduces the risk of relapse in patients with stabilised AD.

Genome Sequence Shows How Genes Quadrupled During Vertebrate Evolution
Written by kim on June 25, 2008 – 3:06 pm -The newly sequenced genome of a dainty, quill-like sea creature called a lancelet provides the best evidence yet that vertebrates evolved over the past 550 million years through a four-fold duplication of the genes of more primitive ancestors.
